Our Weekend in College Station

I love my home as much as the next person, but sometimes I just crave a change of scenery. That's one thing I love about Houston actually - you can hop on a plane and in two hours be in Mexico with a margarita in hand. When I need a break, instead of leaving town, I leave the state! Ha! That being said, I've now been in Houston nearly four years, and definitely am wanting to explore more of the state I call home. 

Earlier this month, Adam and I were going back-and-forth about where we could go for the weekend that was fairly close by, and wouldn't require a lengthy car ride. After bouncing ideas off one another, we both looked at one another and said, "What about College Station?" Since Adam went to Texas A&M, I've wanted to see where he went to school and what these "Aggies" are all about. Seriously, living in Texas is like a constant competition of what in-state school did you go to. Let me tell you, they all come out of woodwork for the football games, no matter how old they are. I also own more A&M clothes then I ever owned of CU Boulder clothes (where I went to college). I guess that's what happens when you're in Texas, so we'll just say I'm an honorary Aggie.

 Whenever I go anywhere I love to soak up everything the place has to offer, and really enjoy it like a local. I also like to travel in style (obviously), and love a good hotel. When I mentioned to a few friends that we were going up to CS, they said that we definitely needed to stay at the Cavalry Court. Luckily, we were able to get a reservation, and by the time we arrived on Friday, we got to have dinner and enjoy some live music at their restaurant, the Canteen.

From the moment we got there, there was so much to love, and no stone was left unturned. The rooms at the retro, military style inspired hotel were so cozy and I loved the barn door that separated the bathroom from the bedroom. The antique Stag refrigerator (so cute) came fully stocked with tons of drinks and snacks. Perfect for a fun football weekend. Our patio also had a great view of the hotel's pool, which I knew we'd have to have a dip in while we were there!

On Saturday, we got up early and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast the hotel offers, which was perfect fuel for the day. After we finished, Adam took me on a guided walking tour of the campus! We saw his old dorm, classrooms, and walked to Kyle Field, where we were heading later for the football game. We got to see all the tailgates being set up, and stopped by the Memorial Student Center, where I picked up my new Aggie swag. What do you think of my shirt and hat?!

Once the tour was done, we were famished so we headed to the Northgate District, which is full of lots of fun bars and restaurants. We checked out some of Adam's old favorite haunts, like the Dixie Chicken, Dry Bean Saloon and the Corner Bar & Grill. Once we finished, we walked back to the hotel, and enjoyed some downtime by the pool. After some fun in the sun, we got ready and headed to the football game. Adam had scored us (ha get it?!) some great Club Level tickets. The seats were perfect and I totally indulged in the game-day food way too much - I mean who can resist a hot dog covered in mac and cheese and coleslaw?

After the Aggies beat South Carolina, we walked back to the hotel. After all was said and done, we had walked over ten miles!!!! We ended the night with a night cap at the Cavalry Courts neighboring, newly opened hotel, The George. They have a fun whisky bar called, 1791, with lots of great innovative cocktails.

On Sunday, we headed back to Houston with full stomachs and happy hearts! No joke, we ate so many yummy goodies that extra gym time was a must - but it was so worth it! It was great to see a new part of Texas, and experience part of Adam's past (cheesy, but true). It was a perfect weekend and I can't wait to go back. We'll definitely be staying at the Cavalry Court again, too - a College Station must!
